The Legend of the Sky Kingdom is a 2003 animated feature film directed by Roger Hawkins and produced by Phil & Jacqui Cunningham. Produced in Zimbabwe, the film was the first full-length animated feature film to come out of Africa.

It was in the 2003 Montreal World Film Festival and premiered at the Durban International Film Festival in October 2003. It also screened at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Seoul Animation Film Festival, The London Film Festival, The New York African Film Festival, Sithengi/Cape Town World Cinema Festival and Bath Film Festival.


Three orphans, two critters, one journey... hundreds of adventures. When three orphans escape the Underground City they’ll stop at nothing to reach the Sky Kingdom. The Evil Emperor will stop at nothing to get them back.

This is the story of three children who make a daring escape from the Underground City in which they are slaves of the Evil Emperor. They go in search of the fabled Sky Kingdom and the great Prince Ariel. The Evil Emperor will stop at nothing to get them back...

An epic journey follows their escape, fraught with dangers. Through desert, earthquake, storm and fire, they meet many creatures – some friends and some foes!! In a dramatic roller coaster ride, from forest to plain, through oceans and canyons, their exciting journey unfolds, and as it does – so do their characters.
